Subjects and programs

Students at Strathpine State School participate in a range of educational activities.

Deutsch at Strathpine State School

At Strathpine Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 are given the chance to expand their worldview and enhance their communication skills by exploring Languages. The second language that we learn at Strathpine is German.
Through language learning our students gain perspective on another culture and have the opportunity to build on their current literacy skills, developing a knowledge and understanding of how another language works. The focus of the German program is on the key skill areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students have either a 30 minute (Grade 3) or 60 minute lesson with Frau Baughurst each week in our Deutschklassenzimmer (German classroom) where students develop their skills through different activities, games and use of multimedia.
In 2017 students in Grades 4 and 5 are getting their first taste of Languages and will be developing an understanding of the basics through their beginner-level units ‘Willkommen in Deutsch’ and ‘Grüsse aus Deutschland’. Students in Grade 6 will be building on their prior knowledge of German and extending their vocabulary to new topics in 2017, including ‘Freizeit’ und ‘Promis’.

From Prep to Year 2, classroom music focusses on the practical aspects of music. Each class attends two music lessons with Mr England each week. Lessons are a combination of singing, interpreting music through dance, playing percussion instruments in addition to learning basic rhythms.

Years 3 and 4 attend one music lesson a week. Lessons will consist of a variety of activities with a focus on music theory and making music on a variety of tuned and untuned percussion instruments. In addition to learning music theory, Years 5 and 6 will be learning how to play the guitar.

Religious Instruction

Religious instruction (RI) is offered at the school and is conducted on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The faith group that provides religious instructors to deliver an authorised program is listed below:

Parents of child/ren participating in these programs will be advised if a faith group requires funds to cover the expense of materials used in RI.
Students are allocated to RI based on information provided by parents on the completed Application for Student Enrolment unless other written instructions have been provided to the school.
Note: This information remains operational unless the parent informs the school otherwise in writing.
Students who are not participating in RI will be provided with other instruction in a separate supervised location. Other instruction must relate to part of a subject area already covered in class and may include, but is not restricted to:
• wider reading
• personal research
• revision / homework tasks

Parents will be advised of any changes to the RI program to ensure they are able to make an informed decision on their child’s participation.

Indigenous Education

At Strathpine State School our Indigenous program strives to implement the key goals and principals from the 2013 Solid Partners Solid Futures – partnership approach for excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood, education, training and employment 2013 to 2016.

For more information on how we incorporate this into our school please read our Indigenous Education Plan (PDF 210KB).

Extra-curricular activities

There are 2 choirs:

  • Junior Choir Years 2 and 3 practise one lunchtime session per week, in 2017 this will be on Thursday at first break.
  • Senior Choir Years 4-6 will rehearse on Wednesday mornings before school at 8:15 am.

Both choirs perform regularly on assemblies. Several times a year they perform outside of school, at shows, shopping centres, flea markets and fetes.

Instrumental music

From Year 4 children have the opportunity to learn a specific instrument with our Instrumental Music Teacher Sam Denning. Lessons are weekly in small groups during class time. Instruments include a variety of woodwind, brass and percussion.

Our school concert band consists of instrumental music students from Years 5 and 6.  They practise and perform at school assemblies, shows and competitions.

Dance troupe

We now have a Year 6 dance troupe. Boys and girls are in the troupe. The children learn jazz and hip hop moves to pop songs.

We are a performing arts school!

Our school very actively encourages performing. This makes us different to many other schools.

The Prep-Year 3 children learn bush dances for the Easter dance/hat parade which is held each year in first term.

The whole school performs at school assemblies in their year levels. Each week there is a year level song.

There are also many other opportunities for the children to perform including singing, dancing, playing instruments and drama. Performances for Assembly are actively encouraged.

We have an informal talent show, Strathpine’s Got Talent, in the last week of Term 3 where children get to show off their talents in all the performing arts. Entry is open to all students through an auditioning process,

We also have an end of year carols under the stars event.
