Subjects and programs

Students at Strathpine State School participate in a range of educational activities.

Deutsch at Strathpine State School

At Strathpine Grades 4, 5 and 6 are given the chance to expand their worldview and enhance their communication skills by exploring Languages. The second language that we learn at Strathpine is German.
Through language learning our students gain perspective on another culture and have the opportunity to build on their current literacy skills, developing a knowledge and understanding of how another language works. The focus of the German program is on the key skill areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students have either a 30 minute or 60 minute lesson with Frau Baughurst each week in our Deutschklassenzimmer (German classroom) where students develop their skills through different activities, games and use of multimedia.
In 2018 students in Grade 4 are getting their first taste of Languages and will be developing an understanding of the basics through their beginner-level units ‘Willkommen in Deutsch’ and ‘Grüsse aus Deutschland’. Students in Grade 5 and 6 will be building on their prior knowledge of German and extending their vocabulary to new topics in 2018, including ‘Freizeit’ und ‘Promis’.

From Prep to Year 3, classroom music focusses on the practical aspects of music. Each class attends two music lessons with Mr England each week. Lessons are a combination of singing, interpreting music through dance, playing percussion instruments in addition to learning basic rhythms.

Years 4, 5 and 6 attend one music lesson a week. Lessons will consist of a variety of activities with a focus on music theory, writing music, recording music and making music. Students learn to play a variety of instruments included Drum Kit, Ukulele and Guitar. Students also focus on using music technologies for performing, recording and composing.

We also have an end of year carols under the stars event.
